You're looking for the best way to find cheap hotels? First, go through this list of top hotel search sites in no particular order. Scroll down to view detailed summaries. This isn't a comprehensive list, but it does contain some of the most well-known and well-respected hotels booking websites. All tested well: While the prices and locations were similar, the results can vary based on which destination you choose, how far in advance you book and the time of the year you travel (high season vs. lower). Here are the most popular hotel booking sites for comparing prices and the best features. If you find any hotel websites missing that you think is worthy of inclusion, mention it in the comments.

Travils
Travils is the most reliable search engine to keep your choices open. It provides a broad range of accommodation, apartments and hostels and is among the largest selections. But your individual preferences will determine whether this is a good thing. If you're not a big fan of hostels for instance hotels, results from searches like this mean that you'll need to filter them out which is an additional step that other hotel booking websites don't need. Travils has something for everyone. Its hotel search engine shows the cost in full (except taxes) which, like HotelsCombined is useful when comparing cheap hotel rates and knowing the total cost of hotels upfront can help you identify which hotels will meet your budget.

Kayak
Kayak's hotel searches are similar to the flight search. They offer a clean and user-friendly interface that permits users to narrow their search by a variety of possibilities. It also lets you see rates from other booking sites so that you can evaluate each one. The first hotel result will often be higher than better rates farther down the list, unless you explicitly search by price. The results for hotel searches on Kayak are automatically sorted according to the vagueness of "Recommended," which is the case with many other hotel booking sites. Most of the time, higher rates appear first while scrolling results and, sometimes, the lead price is significantly higher than comparable hotel options. This can be problematic, especially if you're trying locate the lowest rates for hotels. Although the website's minimalist design is attractive, it has an issue: The capability to sort prices is not easily accessible, and is not at the highest of the list. Kayak has a solid price comparison and alternatives, if you're willing to look at or sort prices.

Priceline
Priceline is among the most visually appealing hotel search engine websites. It's one of the most simple to navigate. The prices or comparisons aren't much different between the various hotel search engines, meaning it's possible to enhance the experience of users when they search for the best prices. Priceline's prices are comparable to other online travel agents (OTAs). The site's results are largely focused in downtowns and tourist-friendly locations. One of the most unique features offered by Priceline has been its "Name Your Own Price” and "Express Deal" options. For the former option, you are able to submit a final hotel rate that you are willingly to pay. Hotels can then accept this price (with reservations that are non-refundable). The flash deal hides the hotel's name until you've made the reservation. Although it may seem to be a bit too slick, these hotel search options can save substantial cash.

BookingBuddy
BookingBuddy lets you compare a variety of hotel booking sites in one click. This site allows you to quickly compare prices across the many search websites you like (like Trivago and VRBO) and without the need to perform multiple searches. BookingBuddy will open a new tab that displays the dates of your hotel and destination.

Hotels.com
Hotels.com offers a range of filters that can help you narrow your search and locate the most affordable rates. The first results are balanced between low- and high-end hotels. They're mostly situated close to the city's central area. This is what the majority of travelers want when they search for hotels: a great easy-to-read list of excellently located options. The rates were in line with other OTAs. However, hotel search results showed many hotels with greyed out rooms that were "fully book," which does not serve any purpose other than to increase the an atmosphere of urgency. Certain hotels are sold! Better to act fast! Hotels.com offers many non-hotel properties like guesthouses, condos, bed and breakfasts, among others.

HotelsCombined
HotelsCombined One of our favorite hotels booking websites, utilizes an algorithm for metasearch to search a large number of sources to find best rates on hotels. Search results include multiple choices from the same source, permitting you to compare various room types (for example, "queen bed" vs. "room that you select upon the time of check-in"). You can also switch between hotel rates that contain or exclude tax. HotelsCombined identified a lot of airport hotels, so it defaulted the total price of your entire journey to the more expensive nightly price. Although neither is an issue on their own but it does complicate the comparability process because the majority of hotels show only the rate for the night.

Expedia. Travelocity. Orbitz
It's difficult to discern any distinction between these three old booking websites, other than the color scheme or fonts. Expedia Inc. also owns Travelocity, Orbitz and Expedia. Each site uses the same layout but with slight adjustments. The hotel search results vary slightly, it is interesting. The top result for hotels in each test search was identical across all three hotels booking websites. However the order that followed it varied. Expedia runs them all, and they have the same prices. These excellent hotel search engines don't look like Hotels.com. There are plenty of options, affordable costs (as is the case with any booking site) as well as helpful filters. It might seem like faint praise for discount websites however there's something to be said for consistency. These discounts and special offers are what makes the three engines above more effective than other search engines.

Agoda
Agoda was initially an online platform that offered hotel reservations in Asia. The main focus of Agoda's home page is on hotels in Malaysia and Thailand. But now that Agoda is available in the U.S., it delivers an experience for hotel booking that is in line with some of the best hotels listed that are listed on this list. Agoda has provided better prices over its rivals in a few instances, such as one instance where the total cost of booking was lower by $200 than the cost of the hotel listed that was listed on Priceline (with the coupon discount code). You shouldn't expect to get that result every time, however it does show that Agoda is, just like the rest of these hotels booking websites should be considered for the most affordable hotel rates.

TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor's hotel search engine offers the most affordable hotel rates from a variety of websites. It is integrated into the search function of TripAdvisor which lets you search the vast collection of reviews before you begin the process of booking your hotel. So that you can see which hotel bookings will be made (off TripAdvisor), the initial list of hotel results will show the lowest cost as and the origin. TripAdvisor will search the majority of major and lesser-known hotel booking websites. If it is applicable, it includes the hotel's website. Travils rates can be used to book directly through TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor does not display results from Agoda and therefore could not have been able to find this deal. Another proof that there isn't a single perfect hotel booking system. The results of hotel searches are dependent on your location and on the partners.

Trivago
Trivago Another metasearch-based booking site for hotel bookings, also found a low price coupon on Agoda. It did not display the cost. Instead it prominently displayed a Travils greater price in large, bold green text. Odd. The lower-priced Agoda bargain was listed as second in the hotel search results, with a small gray text alongside a number of other deals. Trivago discovered multiple hotels that were cheaper than the Travils price. However, none of the hotels received the highest rating. The lead price was higher than the lowest available hotel prices in several other circumstances. Trivago provides a means to search other lesser-known hotels such as Agoda. But travelers should be sure to look closely at Trivago's results for hotel searches to make sure that Trivago isn't hiding the best deal in the search results.
